Spring Training Notes Feb. 18, 2002 - Maury wins Dodgers Bunting Championship

WILLS IS STILL THE MASTER: Former Dodger great Maury Wills, who has been working with pitchers and catchers on their bunting since the start of camp and is in his second season as the organization's baserunning and bunting coordinator, was able to attest to the fact of why he is considered by many as being one of the great bunters that the game has seen. During today's bunting championship, the 69-year old Wills was able to lay down six of 10 bunt attempts in the opening round, tying pitcher Andy Ashby for the overall lead after the first 10. In the playoff round, Wills was able to lay down his only bunt attempt within the targeted area, while Ashby's attempt drifted past the marker. Among the other group winners from yesterday groups who were involved in today's competition were Mike Johnson, Hideo Nomo, Lindsay Gulin and Matt Herges, who finished third through sixth, respectively. Wills, who holds the Los Angeles Dodger single season record for stolen bases with 104 (1962) and the all-time franchise career mark with 490 thefts, was excited and relived with the victory. "I knew that this would be a tight competition, because I have been teaching the players everything I know about bunting," said Wills. "Even though they have improved tremendously over the last year and a half, I still have not lost my touch."
